The People who Define Us

Sudan, Stick Insects, and What I am Fighting For

In my first newsletter since stepping down as Editor-in-Chief, I want to emphasise the intrigue, quality, and purpose of Katte Gazette's work as a reader. This is the first week in a long time that I have had the time to truly appreciate all the articles they have written. Whether the fall of a dictatorship in Sudan, stick insects disproving a natural law, or a stellar illustration of a sunrise, we are creating stories with purpose. That purpose, educating ourselves, has its own purpose, educating others. Simply, our writers, editors, and designers are pushing the frontier of their knowledge, but also including more people in the news.

As a regular news reader, I have learned a lot about the current situation in Sudan because of the Politics Writer Olivia. By looking back at history, she forces us to look ahead and consider what changes might be necessary to improve the situation. Conversely, the Science Writer Pol has kept me reading the monthly edition of his series Bug of the Month despite my lack of interest in insects. They both showcase how a little research, writing ingenuity, and passion can create marvellous articles. As a reader, I am only pleased I get to stay along for the ride. By creating systems which uplift voices, we can expect more people to say their side of the story.

Meeting the Local Centre Party

Entering the office of Mattias Horrdin, he joked that the reception must view me as a regular. For over 1 month, I have been at Town Hall lobbying and presenting our cause essentially every week. It has been about bridging outside Katedralskolan and letting the world know we exist. It has also been about underscoring young perspectives in an all too grown-up world. The response has been resounding, and at this meeting, we shared ideas and insights.

Horrdin asked about how foreign universities might view our certificate programme. I explained that while they may not know Katte Gazette, they understand what hard work and dedication mean. The certificate programme represents precisely hard work and dedication, which is further legitimised by the signatures of teachers and principals. He accepted the answer, and we agreed that the pure grassroots commitment showcased by our members was likely very highly valued.

Boring, But Important

On Friday afternoon, I will meet with my successor and our amazing volunteer teachers. It is one of the last steps before fully handing over. The Editor-in-Chief, Sophie, will be introduced to some of the staff who make Katte Gazette possible. Louise Callmer and Veronica Terfelt, whether lecturing about objectivity or painstakingly updating the Google classroom, make us possible. They deserve so much praise for everything they have done to help us. I can only thank them and do my best to ensure Sophie can harness the same "can-do" attitude at Katedralskolan.

Thank you for reading and happy weekend!

Regards,

Edward

Our Magazine Katte Gazette is pleased to announce the official release of our second edition magazine. It is exciting news that emphasises young people taking responsibility for the truth. With a Russian fighter jet on the cover page, it reminds us of a European continent facing escalating tensions and heightened divisions. All of us are scared about what it will mean. But we cannot look the other way; we must talk about it precisely because it is hard and encapsulates our greatest fears. If...

An Exchange with Lundagård In the heights of AF-borgen, overlooking Lundagård, some 3.5 flights of stairs above the ground, Sweden's oldest university newspaper keeps quarters. They, adeptly named Lundagård, report on student life at Lund University. With over a century of experience, I had a lot to learn sitting down in their office. I was there to speak about Katte Gazette and listen to their work and organisation in the hopes of gaining insights to strengthen us back at Katte. Photo of the...

An Article of Hope Working on an article this Monday, I visited Malmö Nation. A group of 12 university students, collaborating with the Red Cross Youth, recently initiated a project to help High School students study. The half-an-hour stop was heart-warming. Every volunteer I spoke to emphasised a want to give back; it being their way of saying thank you to all those that had in some way helped them. It is an important local story. Too often we forget that while we cannot individually change...
